SHARON — A former Sharon man who also lived in Kent was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in New Haven to three years in prison and ordered to pay $2.26 million in federal taxes and penalties dating to 1979.

Albert Holland, 70, faced up to 11 years.

In 1998 he offered to settle the case for $120,000, according to evidence presented during a three-day trial in April. The offer was rejected. A jury found him guilty of a single count of tax evasion and two counts of filing false returns.

In 1999, while still challenging the Internal Revenue Service, Holland and a business partner received a $4.65 million settlement in a lawsuit against Active Media Services, an amount Holland moved into a legal entity called "Jawbone," which he formed in the names of his four children. He used the account to buy a home in Kent.
