MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — An Internal
Revenue Service employee in Memphis has pleaded guilty to helping people file
false tax returns.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Memphis says Farrah Jones pleaded guilty Monday
to one count of aiding and assisting in the preparation of a false income tax
return.
Jones, of Memphis, was hired as a tax examining technician in 2001, and was
accused of using the data for returns she filed for herself and others.
During her plea hearing, Jones said she prepared and filed a 2006 federal
income tax return with the IRS for "Taxpayer H.J." that claimed false
dependent information, letting the taxpayer get an improper tax refund.
Sentencing is set for Dec. 3. Jones faces up to three years in prison.
